History/About
The area that would later become Boyne City was first settled in 1856. From that time, the population grew to nearly 10,000 around 1910 with the expansion of the area lumber industry. Today, the City of Boyne City has a population of approximately 3,800 full time residents with a large population increase from visitors and seasonal residents. Boyne City lies on the eastern end of Lake Charlevoix which connects to Lake Michigan and provides worldwide access via the water from our smalltown, inland harbor. Today, Boyne City has a vibrant downtown, high-quality public schools, a variety of industrial and manufacturing companies and expansive public parks which play host to a variety of public festivals including the National Morel Mushroom Festival, Boyne Thunder (a nationally acclaimed offshore power boat poker run) and the 4th of July festivities.
Boyne City Police Department staff includes: a Police
Chief, an Assistant Police Chief, five full-time Officers, three part-time Officers
and a Police Support Specialist.
Our office is within City Hall
and is staffed Monday-Friday 8 AM-4 PM by our Police Support Specialist. Our staff proudly provides 24-hour police
services by way of visible patrols, crime prevention, response to both criminal
and civil complaints and investigations, all with an emphasis on community
policing. We remain active in our public
school system with routine visibility on their campus, our annual 4th
grade bike safety and elementary school Halloween safety programs, among
others. BCPD has proudly presented the D.A.R.E.
(Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program to Boyne City 5th grade students
since the late 1980’s.
The Boyne City Police Department has a well-rounded staff
with a diverse set of skills and abilities.
Within our own staff we have instructors in firearms, defensive tactics,
less-lethal munitions, electric conductive weapons, speed measurement, active
violence response for schools and community members and FAA part 107
certification for small unmanned aerial systems.
We have a patrol fleet of three Ford Explorer Interceptors outfitted with up-to-date equipment and technology. We also provide police mountain bike patrols throughout the summer months with a fleet of five traditional police mountain bikes and two electric police mountain bikes which allow for increased citizen contacts and greater patrol visibility and maneuverability during busy summer events.
